Introduction to this blog.

What I am intending to do through this blog is to chronicle my progression through the NRA Marksmanship Qualification Prohram, which cane be found at http://mqp.nra.org. My ultimate goal is to reach the level of Distinguished Expert in all of the disciplines that are available to the shooter.

Beginning

For various reasons (the first being that as I am writing this it's December and getting awfully cold out) I decided to start with the Pistol courses.  As I was looking through the courses of fire, I realized that you can probably start off at a higher level than the Basic Practical right off the bat.  I made the decision immediately to skip the basic practical, as I have held a concealed carry license for over 5 years and have been shooting virtually my whole life. I am sure that I have been through a basic NRA safety course at some point, and with as much range time as I have had it's unlikely that I would gain much from it.  If you haven't shot before, by all means take this class.  It could save your life.

Choices

Because I was starting a new project, I decided to choose a normal, everyday, common choice pistol to shoot the class with.  While I could shoot these courses with a .22 and finish in a few weeks, I decided to shoot them with a .45 instead.  I went out and bought a Glock 21 Gen 4 as I feel it is a gun that many people will buy. I know that more people will go for a 9mm glock than the .45 but personally I don't care for the 9mm round. I also decided to shoot the other disciplines with center fire ammunition, .308 for the rifle courses and 12 gauge for shotgun.

What's to come

I plan to shoot every couple of weeks and to post a new blog weekly. I will try to review gear on the weeks I don't shoot, and to share some tips and tricks I can glean from any training I go to or watch. I sincerely hope you enjoy this blog and look forward to writing it weekly.
